SIERRA NEVADA DE SANTA MARTA. COLOMBIA. KOGIS, THE GREAT MOTHER, THE WISDOM
On the slopes of the steep and intricate Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the millenary ancestral Kogi culture maintains alive their habits and traditions, inherited from generation to generation through the passage of time.
Relation between the Kogis and these summits is very close, they consider those peaks to be the heart of the world. Earth is understood as a living thing, a sacred space.
The Mamo is the highest authority in their social hierarchy. His training begins when another Mamo forsees a special quality. From that moment he is lead to a cave in the sacred hill, the Kankurua, where he will remain during the first years of his life exiting only when sunlight has faded away. By remaining within shades and darkness he will develop the sensitivity that will allow him to be connected to Aluna, the spirits world, where the forces of the universe get in harmony.
The Kogis life style is based on the force/strength that is awarded to them by Haba, The Great Mother , The Creative; their mythology tells us that they are humanity´s “Eldest Brothers”, they dedicate their work and offerings to compensate the harm inflicted to the Earth by us the “youngest brothers”.
Women and men, always dressed in white, are surrounded by a garden of extraordinary beauty; flower meadows, dragonflies and butterflies flying, little lakes with goldfish, carved stone thrones that invite to meditate…. Children are in charge of looking after these wonders. Their culture is based in austerity. They see the invisible and understand the ineffable; they know in a way that us, the youngest, do not understand. They are aware of the life sequence, being unify to It: what it is inside it is also outside.
