“I entrust myself to the forces of nature. Let them dilute the icy coldness within my being, so my unconditional essence flows towards creation”

INTRODUCTION

PUPÆ aims to complete the three parts project PRO uses to show the ways from the realms he has gone through within his own inner journey. As a follow up to the voyage DESSERTS WITHIN DESSERTS and the immersion to the origins from OXYGENE, PUPÆ PROJECT arrives to display another aspect from the journey: the rest within the kind/gentle bosom of femininity/womanhood.

Femininity is this project´s subject. We penetrate into nature to account its vast creative generosity, we want to portrait both its beauty and wisdom expressed throughout its forms. We acknowledge the feminine creative principle and from there we enter communities that guard consciousness of HER, addressing the relation these people stablish with plant world, their ancestral wisdom, medicinal plants knowledge and shamanism.

Water acts as a metaphor for inner process. Its itinerary from the mountains to the sea allows life to emerge, a nutritious element. The ice from the Andean peaks is our departing point, to which we will return after entering the deep vegetation inhabiting within their foots.

PUPÆ is a journey´s tale/story. PUPÆ is the account of a journey.

CONTEXT

Archaeology and anthropology studies focused on gynocentric cultures – organized around a maternal principle- show signs of societies that live/living long periods of time in absence of war, where people life is orientated to creativity rather than survival. During peace time spontaneously emerge a feminine authority/power/control that does not imply hierarchy and which presence mix up/blends with the flow of daily live itself; being the maze/web/framework that binds together these people within an horizontal social order, adknowledging the unique singularity and contribution from each individual.

The Femenine principle shows us life as something unified and continuous. It accepts that everything that exits, it does/does beyond the ability of our senses and therefore there is a way into knowledge which does not implies reasoning/reason. It is within nature that it is possible to understand that the harmony that comes out/exits within creation happens when each one comply with one purpose of existence.

PUPAE aesthetic aims to make visible femininity as the kind and generous aspect of creation, calling on to awake the/our senses to beauty and abundance. To understand the essence of what we are depicted/represented/symbolised within plant world, discovering/finding life original forms in its expression of femininity. To show the reflection from the relation stablished with Nature by those living within it.

We intend to penetrate/go deep into those woods, jungles and settlements living within Mother Nature, to search from its teaching the evocative codes/signs which would send us back to our essence/true being, which would give us the chance to feel life as we intuitively imagine it is.

TRIBUTE TO JOSÉ CELESTINO MUTIS

Attention for plant world was brought to live splendidly through the work of José Celestino Mutis during The Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada. He gathered information from over twenty thousand plant species for 30 years, his drawings illustrate this vast and rich world´s anatomy. Pablo Pro, fascinated by his work, wants to pay tribute to Mutis through a summary of images which will immortalize this plant world. Guided by botanists and healers we will penetrate into the essence of plants. From the humbleness by whom does not intend to cover everything and from the total respect by whom applaud a work by the display of it.

THE JOURNEY

We listen the sounds/voices of the ice that lives/inhabits at the peaks of The Andes; as we discern/discerning its shape we sense/perceive that water it is static up there and that, as it melts, it nurses on its way every being that absorbs its existence: life awakes. By changing its forms, its speed, its tempo; it is the source of life, planet Earth´s muse that nourish every living being with tenderness and measure. Performing a dance where it is never the same but it is always itself.

Pupae follows the water courses of communities based along the side hills of the Andes, in a search/quest for that teaching which will allows us to retake/recover our own courses??. Our journey is supported by four reference

points, places we know and we have lived together in and from which a precious material is given off for our search. We travel on an open itinerary, knowing that our destinies/destinations will be shown to us by those who can see along the way.

It evolves from El Chocó where we will set ourselves to engage/tackle the itinerary to the Kogi, Shipibo and Mapuche communities; each one of them chosen due to their unique concept and expression of femininity.

“ This is the jungle that sheltered and embraced me. A no hostile place that taught me if one surrenders and entrusts to it, it will have/does have the ability to heal. I understood that one sickens when exiting one´s natural rythmn”

EL CHOCÓ. COLOMBIA. ENTRANCE TO NATURE

El Chocó, region located along the Colombian coast where The Pacific Ocean and the jungle converge. One of the places on our planet with largest biodiversity. Also one of the places where rains the most; abundancy meanders by water courses, cascades and backwaters.

Within/In this jungle we feel embraced and sheltered by its vegetation, where we can sense and be part of the perfect harmony within which natural features interact. The Jungle, aware of its own beauty, gorgeous and sublime shows off. The water that feds it also nourishes it and provides life./ It is being fed by water that also nourishes it and provides life.

An expression from the wisdom of this Eden is the Choibá, an immense centenary tree rises up to the sky majestically, it stands still in silence supporting the beings who inhabit it. We attent to understand stillness by embracing it, nourishing ourselves from the silence flow of its sap, which/that heals and protects us.

Another sign of the greatness of nature is the Yuriba whale who reaches this coast looking for warm waters to engage on an act of love to the natural process of creation, mating and giving birth.

In this place we aim to restore our connection with plant world and to get used to the rhythm and languages of the jungle to achieve a coherent dialog with the individuals from the communities we will visit, to open ours eyes to be able to feel whatever is going to be shown to us.

SIERRA NEVADA DE SANTA MARTA. COLOMBIA. KOGIS, THE GREAT MOTHER, THE WISDOM

On the slopes of the steep and intricate Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the millenary ancestral Kogi culture maintains alive their habits and traditions, inherited from generation to generation through the passage of time.

Relation between the Kogis and these summits is very close, they consider those peaks to be the heart of the world. Earth is understood as a living thing, a sacred space.

The Mamo is the highest authority in their social hierarchy. His training begins when another Mamo forsees a special quality. From that moment he is lead to a cave in the sacred hill, the Kankurua, where he will remain during the first years of his life exiting only when sunlight has faded away. By remaining within shades and darkness he will develop the sensitivity that will allow him to be connected to Aluna, the spirits world, where the forces of the universe get in harmony.

The Kogis life style is based on the force/strength that is awarded to them by Haba, The Great Mother , The Creative; their mythology tells us that they are humanity´s “Eldest Brothers”, they dedicate their work and offerings to compensate the harm inflicted to the Earth by us the “youngest brothers”.

Women and men, always dressed in white, are surrounded by a garden of extraordinary beauty; flower meadows, dragonflies and butterflies flying, little lakes with goldfish, carved stone thrones that invite to meditate…. Children are in charge of looking after these wonders. Their culture is based in austerity. They see the invisible and understand the ineffable; they know in a way that us, the youngest, do not understand. They are aware of the life sequence, being unify to It: what it is inside it is also outside.

CENTRAL AMAZON. PERU. SHIPIBOS, THE GUARDIANS OF KNOWLEDGE AND MEDICINAL PLANTS.

By the source of the river Ucayali, tributary of the Amazon within the amazon central jungle, the Shipibos are stablished in communities along the river bank. This people have a spiritual, physical and cultural relation with the jungle they live in/inhabit. Women, ceremony conductors, express and transmit what nature offers by means of Icaros –mantras, sacred chants. Whatever these women see during ceremonies is the source of inspiration for the art/craf they carry out from centuries ago. An art expressed through intricate geometrical forms.

In the Amazonian jungle, where a mayor number of medicine plants are found, Shipibos proclaim themselves to be their great connoisseurs. Shamans, carriers of the knowledge from the plants, practice healing and represent the spiritual world. Amazonian jungle´s fertility is a chant to life, an awakening to the senses, an approach to the act of creation. Each plant flexibility, adapted to all the elements with graceful strength/firmness under any light, offers a language that we intend to feel and listen.

“I FEEL ATTRACTED BY THE BEAUTY OF THIS ENVIRONMENT AND THE KNOWLEDGE THAT SHIPIBOS HAVE ABOUT MEDICINAL PLANTS. I AM INTRIGUED BY HOW ICAROS IN THE CHANT OF WOMEN RESOUNDED INTERNALLY. THEIR GEOMETRIC DESIGNS ARE THEIR HEALING CHANTS´ STAVE, SHAPES I WOULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINE”

ARAUCANÍA. CHILE. MAPUCHES AND THE WOMAN OF HEALING POWER.

In the Araucaria we encounter the Mapuches, the people of the earth. They represent a bridge between occidental and indigenous culture. People who retain the integrative worldview between humans and nature, who speak about the balance and complementarity of pairs in all the elements of existence. Man and woman have always walked together. The Machi , woman of healing power, holds and hit the kultrúm, her sacred/ceremonial drum, while she modulates chants and laments to get Good and Evil energies in order, so mediating amongst the earth , The “World we walk”, and the transcendent reality, The “World above”. Wallmapu is the hearth surrounding, the land they belong to, the mother´s womb that gives life to them/giving them life. Mapuches are trying to recover their sacred land. They prevail in the motherland/matria, the invisible structure women have woven over time, their culture, that what keeps them together in understanding a reality that stands behind life, identity and transcendence. Nature is their temple.

We now retrace the course of water, approaching again the ice, the place we departed from to complete this learning circle. We encounter ourselves again by the snow-capped peak, the stream, the dew, the moss. Water is the element by which life is transmitted to us.

“I APRROACH THE MAPUCHES CALLED BY THEIR COMMINTMENT TO THE EARTH/MOTHER EARTH. TO ITS HILLS AND CENTENARY OAK FORESTS, KEEPERS OF THE SACRED PLACE. TO THE STRENGTH OF THE FIVE SNOW-CAPED VOLCANOS, TURNED INTO/MADE INVISIBLES BY FOG AT TIMES”

“I approach them because the relation this people have to the vegetable world calls my attention, the Eden they inhabit seems magical to me. Also their concept of The great Mother, their relation to Her and their symbology”

THANKS

We are called to encounter abundancy. As born from a dream, we live a voyage while She invites us to share all created beauties, nature in its purest expression. A voyage of discovery along the boundaries of Mother Earth unconditional love, who request from us, as an exchange for the sharing of Its teachings, that we let ourselves be shrouded, as if this project was translucent silk garment around us.

We wonder what it means to live in/within It, in which way It shows in life, which aspects of us we should care for to feel her, to come to form part of Its own essence.

We will search for Its signs guided by the gaze of those who know It, who work at It, live from It and respect It.

We intend to entrust ourselves to the forces of nature so It can penetrate our consciousness, our outlook.

We entrust ourselves: the chrysalis period of latency allows vital forces prompt the original forms/status.

PUPÆ is our master word.
